Integrating GBV Prevention within Women's Economic Empowerment Project

Background

The Lebanon pilot project integrates gender-based violence (GBV) prevention into women’s economic empowerment activities with the aim to support equitable and non-violent relationships among women and men, both from Lebanese host communities and Syrian refugees. As part of the project, women participating in the women’s economic empowerment activities invited their partners or male relatives to attend the gender-transformative sessions which aim to fundamentally change the balance of power between women and men for greater equality. The approach is based on Indashyikirwa, a programme that reduced intimate partner violence in Rwanda and was adapted based on the specificities of this particular project.

Unlike mainstream livelihood projects focused solely on providing economic resources and technical skills training, the pilot also created safe and women-only spaces for women to discuss challenges, share their expertise and advice, and learn about local services and risk mitigation measures. The project also launched Gender Equality Cafes, spaces for women community members and municipal government to come together to develop solutions, based on the expressed needs, concerns and proposals of the women.
