Ending Gender-based Violence and Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (2018-2022)

UNDP and the Republic of Korea launched the global project “Ending Gender-based Violence and Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (2018-2022)”. Through a portfolio of pilots in seven countries – Bhutan, Indonesia, Iraq, Lebanon, Moldova, Peru and Uganda – the project is testing new tools and approaches to reduce GBV and intensify progress towards other development goals, such as economic empowerment, climate change and governance.

🌐 Background

Preventing gender-based violence (GBV) is transformational: it improves the heath of women and children, improves economic productivity and educational attainment, and reduces risks of mental illness and substance abuse, among other benefits. It can also help accelerate achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The main goals of the project are to:

1. Generate new evidence on the benefits of investing in GBV prevention not only in terms of reducing GBV, but in relation to other development goals, such as health, social cohesion and economic empowerment;

2. Scale up interventions and translate the pilots evidence into programme, policy and advocacy tools, equipping decision makers at local, national and international levels with practical recommendations; and

3. Strengthen the ability of local partners to weave GBV prevention and response in their work, via new knowledge, skills and tools to reduce GBV.
