WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
The international Stockholm +50 meeting might be over, but it is now the real work begins. Going forward, we will accelerate action for the environment, implementation of policies and collaboration for green transition - guided by the feedback received in our national consultations.
On the 27th of July, UNDP and the Swedish Embassy organised a post-conference discussion at the Green Expo in Harare, an initiative led by Zimbabwe Sunshine Group. Government officials and representatives from both the public, private an civil society attended.
ZIMBABWE AT STOCKHOLM +50
As the threat of earths triple planetary crisis - climate, nature, and pollution - constantly grows more urgent, world leaders gathered to accelerate the implementation of environmental-, climate- and biodiversity- related policy. Stockholm +50, a crucial international environmental meeting took place on the 2nd and 3rd of June 2022 in Sweden and sought to commemorate the 1972 Stockholm United Nations Conference on the Environment and celebrate 50 years of global environmental action. The meeting followed months of national and regional consultations around the world, including in Zimbabwe.
“Stockholm +50 was a pivotal moment to translate momentum into serious action” said Natalie Mangondo, Finance Youth Fellow with the UNFCCC Climate Champions Team, who represented Zimbabwe’s youth at numerous events and panels at the international conference in Stockholm. She continued, “As a young person from one of the most climate vulnerable countries, my hope was that this event would showcase what radical collaboration between science, policy, and business can achieve if replicated and scaled”.
Nathalie Mangondo and Kimberly Gudhlanga and the Minister of Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry, hon Nqobizitha Ndlovu in Stockholm.
