Checklist: Key Gender Dimensions and Elements of the NBSAP

Andrea Quesada Aguilar @United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) • 2 October 2026

The new generation of NBSAPs provides countries an opportunity to recognise that biodiversity actions must incorporate a gender equality approach, in order to reduce persistent gender inequalities and promote opportunities for women’s empowerment. To achieve these goals, a series of essential gender elements have been identified in order to define specific targets and indicators to be incorporated into the NBSAPs, whether through sectoral actions, or in the country’s NBSAP implementation plans and/or strategies.

The objective of this document is to provide a guide on key gender elements for countries that are: (a) updating their NBSAPs; (b) designing new biodiveristy policies; and/or (c) developing sectoral policies.
