IPPN 2024 in Review

Key Insights from the IPPN Knowledge Cafés
As we reflect on 2024, the IPPN Knowledge Cafés brought together insights and strategies to tackle complex development challenges through systems thinking and integrated policy solutions. These sessions highlighted practical approaches to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Here are some of the key takeaways:
The session on Accelerating the SDGs with Evaluative Evidence: Lessons from a Synthesis on Partnerships demonstrated how evaluation synthesis aggregates findings from diverse sources, including UN evaluations, academic databases, and voluntary national reviews, to inform policy and programme design. The Partnership Pillar Synthesis showcased how evidence gap maps visually highlight well-researched areas and reveal knowledge gaps on key areas under the five pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals – People, Peace, Planet, Prosperity, and Partnership, enabling more transparent and evidence-informed decision-making.
Discussions on Capacity Development as a Lever to Accelerate Transformation for the 2030 Agenda emphasized how building individual, institutional, and political capacity drives systemic change. Speakers highlighted the critical role of civil service training, using Brazil’s experience as an example, where equipping public officials with narrative-building and decision-making skills helped advance SDG implementation despite significant policy and resource challenges.
Learnings from Intersectional Approaches to Disability-inclusive and Gender-responsive Budgeting highlighted how integrating disability and gender perspectives into public budgets ensures more inclusive policy outcomes. Practical examples from Nepal showcased how gender-responsive budgeting frameworks were expanded to include persons with disabilities, strengthening local governance structures and enhancing participation in budget planning and monitoring processes.
The Leveraging Migration for Accelerated Sustainable Development Outcomes session highlighted how migration can drive social and economic progress when integrated into local development strategies. Insights from the Joint Global Programme “Making Migration Work for Sustainable Development” (M4SD) showcased how migration-focused policies helped transform communities across 11 countries by fostering inclusive local governance, enabling access to services, and creating livelihood opportunities for migrants and host communities alike.
The session on System Strengthening as a Critical Lever to Transform Education and Accelerate Progress towards SDG 4 highlighted Jordan’s System Strengthening Partnership (SSP) with UNESCO and donors. It showcased how investments in governance, data management, and crisis-sensitive planning have bolstered the resilience and inclusivity of Jordan’s education system. Key achievements of this programme include improved monitoring frameworks, inclusive education policies, and enhanced evidence-based decision-making to ensure no child is left behind.
