Zero Step Warm Data Project

An Invitation to Participate in SDG Action Zone Sessions as part of the High-Level Dialogue on Energy Ministerial Thematic Forum 21-24 June 2021

“Arguably, the fate of humanity is a measure of our capacity to evolve beyond the destructive patterns we are now engaged in. I would suggest that this evolution relies on the possibility that we might see our world differently—as a living process, not as a mechanism” – Nora Bateson

These SDG Action Zone sessions are an invitation into a space of care, curiosity and humility to learn together and build relationships through the 'Warm Data' inspired process called People Need People Online - developed by Nora Bateson and stewarded by the International Bateson Institute (IBI).

These sessions will provide an overview of the Zero Step Warm Data Experiment that has been conducted in May and June alongside the formal High-Level Dialogue on Energy Technical Working Group process. The experiment was a series of conversations to meet each other and experience shifting perceptions in relationship to energy in this changing world. More than 60 sessions have been held with thousands of conversations experienced in dozens of countries across the world.

These sessions are an opportunity for people to experience People Need People Online (PNP), which is a leading-edge systems process and practice that reveals the systemic patterns we are bound by to better perceive the interdependencies and relationships that we have with energy. Thereby enabling fresh and new perceiving and thinking within families, communities, governments, businesses, investors and society to approach the energy access and energy transition challenges in a new way.

Given the nature of the PNP Online process, these sessions will build relationships that build relationships and therefore you are invited to participate in all four as a series, or if time does not permit then to just join one or more sessions on any of the four days.

The PNP "Pods" will be hosted by Marcel Alers (UNDP, Head of Energy) and Scott Williams (UNDP, Systems Innovations Advisor) together with groups of Certified Warm Data / PNP Hosts. These conversations are for ALL walks of life - the everyday person - whether you are a grandmother and mother who enjoys farming, a visionary that is passionate about working for energy justice, or both, a student, life-long learner, caretaker, healthcare worker, clean energy researcher, energy efficiency entrepreneur, artist, tech philosopher, writer, designer, gardener, scientist, consultant, creative, investor, government official, dad, young, old and in between.

This is the continuation of an ongoing mutual exploration into finding new possibilities for our multiple overlapping crises, embracing a new way of thinking about questions like what is essential, what is leadership, where is the edge of responsibility, who am I now, what is work, life, family, health, education, growth, power, transformation and more.

Hello everyone, this is Rachel dialling in on behalf of the Pod 1 team (also called the Hap-Pie Pod) with Lucy, Maria, Melanie, Simoon and Yannis. We held our opening Zero Step Warm Data session on Friday 7th May and wanted to share a "sneak peek" update with you. We were 46 participants engaged in dialogue for 95 minutes, alternating large and small group moments.

The session started with a very unexpected technical twist, that unwittingly turned out to be one of the best online ice-breakers I have ever experienced!

We will continue with the 2nd session in our series next Thursday 13th May. Not all of the participants enrolled (62 to-date) were present last week, so we very warmly encourage you to join us by signing up for session 2 taking place next Thursday 13th May at 9am CEST: we will be continuing to "weave in" first-time participants along the way, and welcome you with arms wide open!

Sign up here and you will receive details on how to join: https://bit.ly/33pch8c

Please feel free to DM me if you have any queries!

Warmly,
Rachel

P.S. Absolutely no prep needed -- just come exactly as you are!!!

What a lovely session it was last week Rachel. Thank you to you and the other hosts. I loved Yannis's way of showing people how to rename themselves, and how gracefully you all handled the minor technical hiccup.

Brigitte Sistig ideally you will want to join one pod series and attend all the sessions of that pod, so that you build conversation and rapport with a certain group. But of course that depends on whether it works with your schedule, so next best option is to attend as many sessions as you can from that series, and if you skip a few that's ok too.

Hello everyone ?

I am pleased to extend you an invitation to join me in Pod 11: https://bit.ly/3h6R37l

We had our first session this morning with about 30 people sharing their stories as we explored the question "What is essential?". Most were experiencing the warmth and mutual learning for the first time, and at least a couple of the participants seemed to feel a shift though they couldn't quite explain what had shifted, they simply spoke about a feeling somewhere inside, and a sense of new way of thinking about their work and their life.

We are welcoming new participants every day and those not yet registered are warmly welcome to join us at any time to add your spices to the soup that we have started stirring together in Pod 11 ??

What a diverse and delicious range of conversations I enjoyed at (for me) yesterday's gathering, Scott. I'm so grateful for the shift in my perspective which I shared near the end and which is still percolating.

I will be tentatively tending to tech hosting in POD 4- preparing the ground and seeing what might sprout in the space and what might dissolve. So far we are learning new words and new ways to come together in conversation across diverse realities.

And it continues. We shared stories from Ireland to Africa this week as our conversations stirred each others memories, as we started to notice this and that, our stories found places in and around each other. Culture, belonging, language, loss of meaning, loss of place, tensions, chickens, donkeys, kindness, laughter, ecosystems, forests, families, the digital divide- a new drop- in drop- out space, and the lingering pain of those torn from their homes all held together in pod 4- TunaAfrica.

Thank you so much for holding these meaningful conversations.

The 2nd day of Pod 1 really opened me up (thanks to the personal, vulnerable stories shared by everyone).

I was afraid of exposing how uneducated I am, so I held back during the 1st day. But thanks to Yannis, Simoon, and many others who shared their personal, vulnerable stories organically... I felt safe enough to participate with my questions and stories.

And I was moved by how everyone responded with sincere and meaningful questions and stories. Some of your stories connected multiple contexts in very meaningful ways. And even when our stories didn’t seem related… it led to fun conversations (sometimes bursting with laughter ?).

So, thank you for organising this, and for sharing your stories. ??

We are now about a third of the way through the current Zero Step Warm Data experiment-ing with more than 20 sessions already held with more than 500 people from all over the world of all ages. The good news is that there are still around 40 sessions that you can join if you haven't yet had a chance to participate (just click on one of the pod registrations in the table above) - the magic of these ways of being with other humans is that whether you join the whole series or come in later in the series or pop in for only 1 session,,, your particular complexity mushing together with all the other participants just increases the diversity, and the possibilities in finding new patterns of life-ing. I would love for anyone interested to join us next week in Pod 11 on either Monday or Thursday from 0900 CEST: https://bit.ly/3h6R37l

An emotional experience noted by kaa Faensen who is one of the Pod 3 Coordinators from the first Pod 3 session today:

"One of our participants painted while we were in the soup and her tears mixed the aquarell color; while another one shared her being torn between being jewish and having friends in Israel and Palestine while living abroad. She shared her tear dotted painting afterwards in the symmathesy. It was a powerful moment"

In today's Pod 1 session, I shared a story. The act of putting it out there felt edgy and I didn't really know how to start or end it, but "looking into the room" and into your faces, I found my way through it. I am so grateful to all of you who held space and opened up my own remembering much further. It was a very widening and deepening experience for me. Thank you.

Like many other participants, I was deeply moved by your story, Rachel.

I won’t spoil your story to those who weren’t present. But I must say your story left a strong impression in my heart, even days after the session (especially the tender moments related to “hands”, “feet”, and “warmth”).

I witnessed how these tender details of your story sparked more of us to share our precious stories. It helped us open up ourselves, to share + learn + care more about each other, in the warm conversations that followed.

I’m so grateful for having experienced this. Unfortunately, I’ll have to skip session #4 & #5 to handle a family emergency. But I’ll definitely be back in session #6, to mush again into this wonderful symmathesy.

Thanks James for your comments and for letting us know you won't be able to join us for the next two sessions. We will miss you, and I hope you will have all you need to cope with the family emergency -- sending you good thoughts for the weeks ahead. Looking forward to having you back with us for session #6!

Great session for Pod 1 today, the 4th one in our series of 6. We had the joy of welcoming 2 newcomers for their very first "People Need People" experience, and it was lovely to see how everyone just intermingled and got involved seamlessly. We got more daring with the tech and shuffled the breakout sessions differently from previously. It seems like people really enjoyed the in-between space of shuffling between breakouts.

We are always open and happy to welcome anyone else who might (still?) be hesitating about whether to join for the next 2 sessions -- on June 4th and 10th. Please do join us, whether you are totally new, or have missed some previous sessions: it's never too late to come in (and begin, or pick up from where you last left off)! We welcome you with open arms, and open hearts.

It's been such a joy dancing together in the sessions, watching insights from one person stimulate unexpected new insights in another and noticing my own perspectives shifting. Thank you everyone who's been coming, and I hope to meet more people who are yet to join.
