From Personal Growth to Biodiversity Leadership
"Women often don't believe they can change anything." Civil society representatives argue that one of the main barriers to women and girls' participation in biodiversity conservation processes is a lack of awareness and competence.
A joint initiative of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership and the National Biodiversity and Biosafety Center of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan facilitated a multi-stakeholder dialogue aimed at identifying existing gaps in the context of gender and biodiversity.
Scientists, community activists, youth, gender advocates, and representatives of responsible government agencies actively participated in the discussions. The diverse group of participants allowed for a diverse perspective on the issue, and group work helped identify a number of key factors limiting women's participation in biodiversity-related processes.
"Legal norms are quite effectively structured and allow women to be active participants in biodiversity conservation efforts. Moreover, certain strategies and programs encourage and promote women's active participation in various sectors. However, unfortunately, the practical mechanisms for implementing these provisions remain insufficient." Furthermore, participants agree that traditional stereotypes, according to which men play a key role in decision-making, continue to persist in certain regions.
It has been repeatedly stated that women, particularly in rural areas, still lack sufficient information about how they can be involved in these processes, what practices are most sustainable in land use, and how to become part of national and regional negotiations on biodiversity issues.
Participants agreed that respecting and protecting women's rights will strengthen their position in various sectors, including agriculture and environmental protection.
The discussions resulted in proposals to enhance women's environmental capacity and strengthen their role, which will be presented during the updating of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.

В горах Таджикистана живёт удивительная женщина – Нозимова Гулрухсор. Она посвятила свою жизнь сохранению бесценного богатства родного края – местных сортов растений.
🌾 Благодаря её инициативе создан семенной банк, где собрано более 60 видов семян традиционных культур.
🌿 Гулрухсор делится знаниями о устойчивом земледелии, обучает фермеров новым практикам агролесоводства и помогает адаптироваться к изменяющемуся климату.
🌸 Её усилиями возрождаются забытые сорта, которые становятся символом возрождения и надежды.
🏔️ История Гулрухсор – это вдохновение для всех, кто верит, что маленькие шаги способны сохранить природу и культурное наследие целого народа.
Пусть её пример станет искрой для каждого из нас!

Gulrukhsor Nozimova is such an important environmental steward and her work is not only conserving the genetic diversity of seeds in Tajikistan but also contributing to the food security of the rural communities! This is a perfect example of a gender transformative nature based solution!
🌿 Цвет из природы: гранат и лук 🇹🇯
В рамках инициативы «Ускорение системных изменений в целях обеспечения гендерного равенства и сохранения биоразнообразия посредством национальных стратегий и планов действий по сохранению биоразнообразия» показываем простую, но мощную практику: в таджикских общинах из кожуры граната и луковой шелухи варят натуральные красители и окрашивают шерсть и ткани — без химии и почти без отходов. Женщины-хранительницы знаний передают эти рецепты из поколения в поколение, поддерживая и культуру, и природу.
Почему это — про системные изменения и НСПДБ:
• меньше синтетических красителей → чище вода и почвы, вклад в цели по сохранению экосистем;
• «нулевые отходы» и локные материалы → круговая экономика на местах;
• поддержка женских кооперативов и ремёсел → гендерное равенство в «зелёных» цепочках ценности;
• сохранение традиционных знаний и видов растений-красителей → живая часть национальных стратегий по биоразнообразию.

We held an online exchange meeting with colleagues from Uruguay focused on sharing experiences in supporting women-led initiatives and promoting products based on local natural resources. We discussed practical approaches to empowering women through sustainable entrepreneurship, as well as ideas for promoting products rooted in local identity and respectful use of nature. It was especially valuable to see how traditional knowledge, business development and biodiversity conservation can be meaningfully combined. We also shared Tajikistan’s experience and community-based initiatives where women produce natural oils, soaps, honey and herbal teas.
We sincerely thank Andrea for making this inspiring exchange possible and for creating a space for dialogue, learning and collaboration.
A new women-led store, “Tojikzamin”, has opened in Tajikistan, showcasing how local natural resources can be transformed into sustainable livelihoods. The shop brings together products created by women from different regions of the country using local plants, honey, fruits and traditional knowledge. These include natural cosmetics, herbal teas, oils, soaps, bee products and food items made from local agricultural produce.
This initiative demonstrates how supporting women’s entrepreneurship based on biodiversity and traditional practices can generate income while promoting responsible use of natural resources. By turning local raw materials into value-added products, women strengthen their economic independence and contribute to the conservation of agrobiodiversity and eco-friendly production approaches.
The store was launched with the support of JICA and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, reflecting how development cooperation can turn community-based ideas into real market opportunities. “Tojikzamin” is not just a shop – it is a platform for women’s skills, nature-based solutions and sustainable business models rooted in local communities.

В Таджикистане представлены Дорожная карта и Национальная платформа по вопросам гендера и биоразнообразия
В рамках Национальной конференции «Гендерное равенство и биоразнообразие: путь к системным изменениям» были представлены два важных национальных механизма, направленных на укрепление роли женщин в сохранении биоразнообразия и устойчивом управлении природными ресурсами — Дорожная карта по расширению участия женщин в сохранении биоразнообразия и Национальная платформа по вопросам гендера и биоразнообразия.
Эти инициативы призваны объединить усилия государственных органов, международных организаций, научного сообщества, гражданского общества, частного сектора и местных сообществ для продвижения гендерно-инклюзивных подходов в сфере охраны окружающей среды.
Дорожная карта определяет ключевые направления сотрудничества, роли и зоны ответственности различных заинтересованных сторон, а Национальная платформа станет пространством для обмена знаниями, успешными практиками и развития партнерства в области гендера и биоразнообразия.
Создание этих механизмов является важным шагом на пути интеграции гендерных аспектов в национальную природоохранную политику и достижения целей устойчивого развития.
