As Africa undergoes rapid urbanization and digital transformation, the question is clear: will these shifts reduce inequality—or deepen it?

On 27 April 2026, we organized a virtual side event at the 12th Session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD), titled "Turning the Tide through Social Inclusion: Enhancing Resilience and Digital Safety for Africa’s Most Vulnerable Populations."

The session brought together community voices, policymakers and practitioners to explore barriers to digital access, safety and participation—particularly for marginalized urban communities, including young key populations and sexual and gender minorities—and how these affect health, human rights, and economic opportunities.

Speakers included:

  • Graeme Reid, the UN Independent Expert on sexual orientation and gender identity
  • Farai Chirongoma, UNDP Zimbabwe
  • Melusi Simelane, SALC (South Africa)

The session was moderated by Monica Tabengwa, UNDP.

It was organized by UNDP through the #WeBelongAfrica programme, Pan Africa ILGA and the Southern Africa Litigation Centre.
