Participatory Technology Assessments for Democratic AI Governance

Alina Vaidya Mahadevan

How can we ensure that Artificial Intelligence truly serves the public good? And what happens when people—not just experts—shape how AI is governed?

Civic Engagement in the Digital Age is a UNDP webinar series examining how digital technologies—such as civic tech, AI, and social media—are reshaping civic space and democratic participation. As digitalisation creates new opportunities for expression and collective action while also introducing risks like disinformation and opaque algorithms, the series explores how an inclusive, rights‑based digital social contract can strengthen democratic life. The series brings together global experts, practitioners, and UNDP Country Offices to discuss tools and governance models for open and participatory digital public spheres.

The second session in the series, organized in collaboration with DemocracyX, introduces Participatory Technology Assessment (pTA)—a practical and powerful approach for bringing public values, lived experiences, and democratic principles directly into AI governance. Participants will explore real-world examples, discover emerging models for inclusive AI decision-making, and reflect on opportunities to apply pTA in their own contexts.
