The European Regional Forum on Sustainable Development is an annual and inclusive intergovernmental forum and a regional platform for supporting countries, in particular those with special needs, in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development while serving as a regional preparatory meeting to the 2022 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
The 2022 European Regional Forum for Sustainable Development will play a unique role as a catalyzer of solutions and peer learning on how to accelerate transformations for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda while recovering from COVID-19. It provides a regional perspective on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda by identifying regional trends and consolidating and sharing best practices and lessons learned. The Forum takes into consideration the contributions of United Nations system bodies (at the regional level), other regional and sub regional organizations, and relevant stakeholders. It also supports follow-up and review of progress on the 2030 Agenda at the regional level.
The event will be organized from 6-7 April 2022 in a hybrid mode.
The Regional Forum on Sustainable Development was established by the Economic Commission for Europe at its sixty-seventh session in April 2017, with the aim to create “a regional mechanism to follow- up and review the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” (E/ECE/1480, Decision B (67)) by:
- creating a space for UNECE member States for peer learning and the exchange of policy experiences in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals;
- providing a regional overview of progress and challenges in implementation that would complement reports at the global level;
- enhancing regional and sub-regional cooperation and addressing trans-boundary issues;
- providing a platform for the participation of all relevant stakeholders, including international and regional organizations, civil society, academia and the private sector.
The mandate for the Regional Forum has been extended by the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) at its sixty-eighth session in April 2019 (E/ECE/1488, decision B (68)).
