Welcome to the premiere issue of the Sustainable Energy Bulletin. This bulletin aims to showcase transformative initiatives, share inspiring innovations, and foster collaboration for achieving sustainable energy access, resilience, and efficiency. At its core lies the conviction that a just transition to renewable energy is an indispensable catalyst for sustainable development.
As we reach the halfway mark towards the 2030 deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the recently launched report 'Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report 2023' at the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) has provided significant insights into the developments made in the energy sector. Despite progress, an estimated 675 million people still lack access to electricity, while 2.3 billion people rely on inefficient and polluting cooking systems. Renewable energy holds the key to reducing poverty, ensuring clean energy access, and realizing the Sustainable Development Goals. However, renewables currently account for only 19.1% of total energy consumption, falling short of the 33-38% target by 2030 aligned with the 1.5°C temperature goals. Adequate financing is essential for meeting these targets, yet international financial flows for renewables to developing countries have declined significantly from USD 24.7 billion in 2017 to USD 10.8 billion in 2021. Without accelerated progress, it is unlikely that Sustainable Development Goal 7, ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy, will be achieved by 2030. The path to realizing SDG7 requires global coalitions, international cooperation, and increased financing to deliver the much-needed colossal promise of the energy transition.
This first bulletin explores initiatives, innovations, and progress on renewable energy access, energy resilience, the energy and health nexus, gender perspectives in energy, clean cooking solutions, and the just energy transition. Whether you are a policymaker, a business leader, a civil society activist, or a curious citizen, we hope you find inspiration from this new bulletin series. Together, let us forge a path towards a sustainable future, where accessible and clean energy serves as a cornerstone for global development.
