A new study warns that half of the world’s governments may be undermining SDG progress, highlighting urgent concerns about policy coherence as the 2030 deadline approaches. Despite global commitments, only 21% of countries have adopted policies that effectively support the Goals, with environmental and governance targets most at risk.
Published in the International Journal of Sustainable Development & World Ecology, the research introduces a data-driven method to assess national policy effectiveness. Using BIRCH, a machine learning algorithm, researchers analyzed 84 indicators across 170 countries, scoring how well policies align with each of the 17 SDGs and the broader 2030 Agenda.
