Nature-based solution projects adopted in Fiji are to protect coastal and river bank communities, says Environment Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy.

In an address marking the International Day of Biological Diversity at Naidiri Village in Sigatoka last week, Dr Reddy said advocacy in biodiversity, environment awareness and education were elements in reaching out to the younger generation on “the importance of safeguarding and protecting our biodiversity”.

Dr Reddy said the Jobs for Nature Rehabilitation (J-NR) Program was another proactive approach adopted by the ministry to protect Fiji’s natural resources.

“The objective of the JNR program is to improve our environmental efforts through the protection, restoration and rehabilitation of the degraded ecosystems while providing economic growth, stability and thriving livelihoods,” he said.

The minister added Fiji had a list of critically endangered species that were threatened with extinction and many of these keystone species underpinned the ecological health and connectivity of Fiji’s natural environment.
