Papua New Guinea University of Technology Head of Department Dr. Cossey K. Yosi & his Deputy Mr. Haron Jeremiah welcomes Stockholmn +50 Agenda. Dr. Cossey K. Yosi express support but urge Development Partners to support his Department in areas of concern particularly in Forestry and Climate related agenda.

The Department of Forestry offers two Programmes; Bachelor of Science in Forestry, BSc. (For.) and Diploma in Forestry, Dip. (For) of which it is strongly committed to undergraduate education. The forestry programme at the PNG University of Technology (PNGOUT) is the main pathway for training technical and professional foresters to work in the forestry sectors of Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific.

We recently reviewed our curricula which came to effect this year (2019) starting with the first years to re-engineer our course delivery in view with emerging global realities. This would enable us to produce graduate who are at par with their peers from any other part of the world. Hence, new curricula operated above the minimum academic standards of the National (PNG) Qualification Framework. The new curricular would even further raise the standard of our programmes.

Looking into the future, we will teach and conduct research in the area of climate change, a critical global transformation that will certainly affect many Papua New Guineans and which they will play an active role in. We’re starting to put more emphasis into reforestation training, including tree planting and management, simply because PNG needs to increase its production of timber. Reforesting grassland is a way to achieve this and it can add great value to the land.

At the postgraduate level, we offer Master’s degree programmes, and even the possibility of earning a PhD for those who want to get more deeply into research. Forestry graduates are employed by an unusual variety of organisations and companies, including industry, different types of non-government organisations (NGOs), and government. Some of our graduates have become entrepreneurs and start their own businesses, an activity that provides people with a high degree of freedom and prospects for earning a good income, and much more flexibility than those working under a boss ever have. Most important of all, they are playing an important role in growing PNG’s economy.

The Department of Forestry is equipped to provide consistent, high-quality and appropriate academic advising, monitoring, mentoring, nurturing and coaching to ensure your academic and personal success.

The Department of Forestry believe that with all of the support services available, including tutoring and Supplemental Instructions, no student should feel left out. Even so, your academic success depends on how well you take responsibility for your own education, including taking initiative to achieve academic excellence.

The Department of Forestry look forward to supporting your academic and personal success at the PNG University of Technology.

Head (Chair) of the Department
