UNDP Ethiopia Country Office, Ethiopia Environment Protection Authority and Ethiopia Ministry of Health launched the Investment Case for Air Pollution Reduction in Ethiopia on June 28, 2024.

Read about the launch

According to the investment case, household air pollution leads to nearly 39,000 deaths in Ethiopia and costs the country 281 billion ETB (US$8 billion) each year, equivalent to 4% of GDP and 53% of the 2023 government budget.

Investing in air pollution reduction methods can have considerable benefits for the country. Investing in the transition of traditional biomass cook stoves to electric cook stoves can generate more than 84 billion ETB (US$2.4 billion) in economic benefits and prevent around 6,000 deaths over 10 years.
