Riding the Resilience Wave All-hands-on-deck for Urban Resilience in Small Island Developing States and Coastal Cities

(November 2024 - World Urban Forum)

Cities in SIDS and coastal areas face heightened yet shared risks, vulnerabilities and development challenges while being least equipped to address/mitigate them holistically. At the local level, the resilience of people, socio-economic assets, development sectors, social networks, local economic development and community livelihoods is under strain. In this sense, investments in urban and community resilience complemented by advancing local economic development has the potential to be an effective strategy for fostering the resilience of local economies. Supporting cities on the frontlines of climate challenge in SIDS and coastal areas, UNDP, UNDRR and UN-Habitat are collaborating to provide policy, programmatic, technical, knowledge and tools and methodologies to advance urban/local risk reduction and resilience action as part of the "Global Program on Integrated Urban Resilience".

Digital Solutions To Reduce Disaster Risk

(October 2024)

Disaster risk reduction is crucial to achieving sustainable development, but current approaches often fail to understand the complexities of emerging risks. Digital solutions can help us collect and analyse context-driven data from multiple sources, enable a better understanding of the interlinkages and underlying drivers of risk and help identify and implement context-relevant solutions to improve risk reduction and resilience.

To help governments better understand and address the complexity of risks and promote risk-informed development, UNDP is embedding digital transformation as a critical enabler of disaster risk reduction and recovery. Get inspired by programming examples from Colombia, and learn about the work of the SDG AI Lab and technologies tracked in the Frontier Technology Radar for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Finance to advance urban resilience and sustainability action

(April 2024)

The webinar, led by UNDP in partnership with UNDRR, focused on how local governments can augment financing options to strengthen urban resilience and better protect their citizens and cities’ basic services and critical infrastructure. Cities consistently identify challenges related to accessing disaster/climate financing as a major impediment to scaled up risk-informed urban development. This resource crunch assumes critical dimensions in cities where budgetary allocations are barely sufficient to maintain ongoing administrative functions and day-to-day services. The webinar focused on how cities can tap into more diverse sources of risk reduction funding and how municipalities can more effectively finance and implement resilience initiatives.

"Quantifying Infrastructure Risks - A Pathway to Sustainable Infrastructure of the Future" - A Spotlight on the Global Infrastructure Resilience Report

(October 2023)

The report "Global Infrastructure Resilience: Capturing the Resilience Dividend" is a pioneering report developed by the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The Report presents a compelling economic, financial, and political imperative for investing in resilience, based on a new cutting-edge Global Infrastructure Risk Model and Resilience Index (GIRI).

GIRI is the first publicly available and fully probabilistic risk model to estimate risk for infrastructure assets with respect to most major geological and climate-related hazards. It can enable governments to understand the contingent liabilities they face and can then inform the development of national infrastructure strategies and plans to reduce risk and strengthen resilience.

Building Resilient Urban Systems Risk-Informing Urban Development: An Imperative for Resilience

(April 2023)

The webinar, led by UNDP in partnership with UNDRR, focused on risk-informed urban development and planning processes in cities/municipalities. Almost two-thirds of the urban infrastructure that will exist in 2050 has yet to be built. Reducing existing and emerging multi-dimensional urban risks and investing in resilience building through a systems-approach (i.e., looking at urban services, capacities, resources, institutions, sectors and stakeholders as a whole) presents a huge development opportunity.

The Value of Partnerships to Reduce Disaster and Climate Risk

(July 2022)

The side event focuses on SDG 17 “Partnerships for the Goals” and how Partnerships are a more effective and efficient way to scale up action to strengthen DRR and CCA across sectors as to individual and siloed approaches. Partnerships contribute to developing common, coordinated and coherent approaches amongst stakeholders and promote multi-sectoral interventions. In the session the panelists elaborate on the value of Partnerships to reduce disaster and climate risk across socio-economic sectors in order to achieve the Agenda 2030. They talk from different perspectives: global, national and local level, from UN, government and civil society perspective. The guiding question for all panelists will be:

  1. How are Partnerships contributing to achieve the Agenda 2030, particularly in the area of DRR/CCA (incl. good practices, lessons learnt, recommendations)?
  2. How can Partnerships in DRR/CCA contribute to the achievement of the Agenda 2030 in the COVID-19 recovery process? How can Partnerships in DRR/CCA contribute to the achievement of the Agenda 2030 in the COVID-19 recovery process?
