Toolkit to Assess the Use of Knowledge
Welcome to the interagency toolkit to assess the use of knowledge!
The Toolkit to Assess the Use of Knowledge is a flexible set of tools that allow for a tailor-made approach to assessing what happens with the knowledge we produce (a variety of knowledge management products, activities, and processes) throughout their use journey (read it, referenced it, applied it, shared it, adopted it, etc.)
The toolkit provides ways to assess the used of four types of knowledge products, approaches, and activities:
- Brief Written Knowledge Products
- Communities of Practice
- Live Knowledge Sharing and Exchange Events
- Group Reflection Activities
Select the type of knowledge product, approach or activity that you want to assess:

Learn how to use the toolkit!
Select the type of knowledge product, activity, or approach of your interest.
Choose the indicators most relevant to you and find detailed information on how to adopt them, including means of verification (how will you get the results and/or how will you test this indicator and what are the activities you are going to run), practical examples and links, and much more!
To make it easier to identify relevant indicators, we have organized them according to a standard user journey for knowledge products comprising six phases according to the user journey:
Assesses according to your needs!
Assessing the use of knowledge should always be informed by:
- A clear definition of success. This will be determined by the reasons for carrying out that product, activity, or approach.
- A basic theory of change/user journey of how success will be reached, and
- A clear idea of who the intended users are, which will inform the design of the product, approach, or activity.
Aware that the focus of our knowledge transfer, sharing, and generation efforts may vary along the user journey, the Toolkit provides a flexible and tailor-made approach that helps you adapt the knowledge assessment to your needs.
