Summary

The Fossil Fuel Subsidy Simulator will allow users to explore how reforming fossil fuel subsidies can free up resources for development priorities and explore the true cost of fossil fuels to countries and their populations. The simulator (which is available in English, French and Spanish) explores the potential impact of fossil fuel subsidy reforms on a temporary basic income, out-of-pocket health expenditures, educational attainment and renewable energy. Explore the tool on the UNDP Data Futures platform: https://data.undp.org/fossil-fuel/.

With the Simulator, you can:

  • Explore how phasing out fossil fuel subsidies can free up resources for development priorities.
  • Dive into the transition process and see the true cost of fossil fuel subsidies to countries and their populations.
  • Experiment with country-level data to discover how reallocating a small portion of subsidies could enable more students to attend school, increase electricity from renewable energies, or fund a temporary basic income for some of the world’s poorest people.
  • Use the simulator to create an evidence-base for your policy development, research or advocacy message.
