The vulnerabilities of most small island developing states (SIDS) extends to the widening digital gap brought by the technological wave. Indeed, it has advanced adaptation in many countries, but it must also ensure that the poor communities are not left behind. And with the pandemic, the disadvantages these vulnerable communities face are amplified. That is why there should be an urgency to implement digital access in SIDS to be able to face external shocks and to build a resilient society. The Technology and Innovation Report 2021 by UNCTAD put forward the major concern of perpetuating inequalities as new technologies emerge. This report calls for effective national governance and strong international cooperation to safeguard equitable innovations among nations.
