Food security is a major challenge for many SIDS, as small isolated islands they are heavily dependent on food imports. The COVID-19 pandemic is intensify the risk of food insecurity faced by SIDS. By the end of 2020, WFP estimates that 265 million people could face acute food insecurity up from 135 million (2019). Based on data prior to the COVID-19, almost all Caribbean and Pacific SIDS already imported over 60% of their food; 50% of all islands import over 80% of their food needs.
