Many small island developing states (SIDS) tend to have limited energy resources, which makes them dependent on imported and expensive fossil fuels--vulnerable to external shocks such as the pandemic and the threats of climate change. However, these nations are committed to achieving 100% renewable energy. With this goal in mind, crucial steps are needed to be taken to build back stronger and greener. The SIDS Global Network Virtual Forum is co-hosted by UN-OHRLLS and IRENA to promote dialogue and foster private sector collaboration in the implementation of the S.A.M.O.A Pathway and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically tackling the interlinkages of SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG 14: Life Below Water as well as the development priorities of SIDS.

This Virtual Forum will also serve as a space to understand and discuss the challenges, needs, and opportunities to build partnerships that can amplify innovation, capacity building, transfer of appropriate technology and knowledge and support for SIDS in order to explore and develop the pathway of recovery for ocean-based energy.
