Thank you to all the participants in the Tunis Forum on Gender Equality for your vibrant engagement on line and in person. The final set of recommendations from the Forum can be found here. This civil society driven report of recommendations from the Tunis Forum will be sent to the Secretariat of the Beijing +25 process to inform the substantive preparations for the report of the Secretary-General on the Review and Appraisal of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action to be submitted to the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW64) in March 2020. It will also inform the substantive preparations for the 20th anniversary of Security Council resolution on Women, Peace and Security, to be held in 2020. The Tunis Forum is a critical part of the civil society mobilization of Generation Equality, ‘Beijing+25: Celebrating 25 years of championing women’s rights’, which - with several other convenings, including Women Deliver 2019, and others through 2019 and 2020 - will continue to bring together the next generations of women’s rights activists with the gender equality advocates and visionaries who were instrumental in creating the Beijing Platform for Action more than two decades ago, to collectively demand all stakeholders to tackle the unfinished business of empowering women, ensuring gender equality and realizing women’s rights for an equal future. |
The Tunis Forum on Gender Equality was held between 24 – 26 April in Tunis. Over 500 participants joined in wide ranging discussions aimed at engaging civil society in the lead up to the review processes of the Beijing +25 discussions, the 20th anniversary of UNSCR 1325 and the first 5 year review of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Discussions in Tunis focused on the four themes highlighted in the online discussion forum that ran from 1 – 28 February; Beijing +25: Women, Peace and Security; Gender equality in local governance; innovation and technology for women’s economic empowerment.
Rapporteurs under each theme brought together the main points of the discussions and a set of key recommendations. These recommendations were read out and discussed on 26 April in Tunis.
The current online discussion on the recommendations is open from 2 – 11 May and is open to all those who participated in Tunis. The aim of this consultation is to ensure that the final recommendations reflect the discussions held at Tunis Forum.
Please read the recommendations and summary of the discussions carefully. They are inevitably a summary and synthesis of what was said. For any key issues that have been missed or should be reflected differently, please leave a comment. We will do our best to integrate views from this further discussion into the final outcome documents.
The results of this consultation will be forwarded to the Beijing + 25 Secretariat to inform the discussion on the Review and Appraisal of the Beijing Platform for Action. The outcome of the Tunis Forum will also inform the preparatory process towards the Global Civil Society Forum on Gender Equality as well as preparations for the 2020 Report of the Secretary-General of Women, Peace and Security.
