In Europe, the Green Deal has set ambitious goals for environmental protection, making sustainability a top priority for numerous sectors and policy areas within the EU. But when it comes to the digital economy, the repeated calls for action and policies towards a sustainable tech sector still haven't delivered on all their promises.

In this context, can a renewed European Competition law be a key driver to boost the region’s efforts towards a digital AND a green economy? The Policy Brief on Competition Policy in Support of Europe’s Green Ambition  seems to indicate that the answer is yes. And this has sparked a new conversation with a view to assess how competition law can concretely contribute to the goals of the European Green Deal.

Join us for a forward looking roundtable discussion on 5 July between 14:00-15:30 to investigate the many ways in which the tech sector in general, and the Digital Services industry in particular, can serve as a driving force to accomplish the objectives of the Green Deal and how this recent shift on competition law’s concepts and laws can be used to foster a digital sustainability agenda.

The topic will be presented by Prof. Viktoria Robertson from Vienna University and Dr. Björn Herbers from CMS to give an outline of the emerging role of sustainability in EU competition law with a focus on digital, including recent cases and the discussions around the DMA, with a view to spark a conversation on how sustainability can be a driver to bridge digital and green transition, and ultimately build a stronger and more competitive digital economy.
