Bold action for conservation like this will protect vulnerable marine ecosystems from environmental threats like coral reef bleaching and fish stock depletion and, in turn, create healthy coastal communities. And while agreements and events such as these, as well as the S2S Platform's open letter for action in the UN Decade of Ocean Science, represent an important display of political will, financing is pivotal for on-the-ground implementation. The Wildlife Conservation Society has made the valuable argument that managing MPAs through local engagement, training, regulations and scientific evaluation requires sustained funding through multi-partner mechanisms to see both the initial achievement of the goal of 30% and their continued growth and success beyond this milestone.
