  • Listen to the fourth episode of the podcast "Exploring Extremism": Uncivil Society - produced by the UNDP Oslo Governance Centre. This episode will examine the relationship between uncivil society and violent extremism.

Regional highlights:

  • The Asia-Pacific PVE regional newsletter is out! Read the bi-monthly snapshot from EU-UNDP PVE projects in Asia, in partnership with UNOCT.
  • The ExtremeLives - Season 4 campaign focusing on stories from Sri Lanka and Maldives was successfully completed. To date, there has been a total reach of almost 5 million on Facebook alone. Through the UNDP-Google Grants partnership, the campaign was also promoted through Google Search Ads, that provided additional insights on campaign performance through Google Analytics. To measure the impact of the videos, UNDP offered a gamified survey which included links to resources on psycho-social support and activities and opportunities in the respective countries.

Doha High-level conference

 

  • The Interfaith Dialogue on Violent Extremism (iDove), jointly launched by the African Union Commission and the German Agency for Development Cooperation (GIZ), held its 5th international youth forum in Addis Ababa. The 3-day forum, convened between 28-30 March, summoned youth practitioners from the Africa, Asia and MENA regions to examine the nexus between climate change, migration and violent extremism, to inform pathways to youth-led solutions. The Regional PVE Project Officer attended a panel discussion to share key insights of the UNDP policy brief “Toward New Policies for the Climate Change and Violent Extremism Nexus in Africa” (2021) and the overall UNDP approach to ensure sound, integrated context analysis and climate-proofing of PVE and peacebuilding interventions.

Country highlights:

  • In Trinidad and Tobago, the final event of the Peace Innovation Challenge was held on March 29, 2022, under the PVE-YES project. The top 10 finalists, chosen to pitch their ideas live to a panel of judges, have competed to gain one of five prizes of TT$50,000 to implement their project ideas.

  • Moreover, in March 2022, UNDP Trinidad and Tobago commenced the establishment of a Learning Space for girls at the Youth Transformation and Rehabilitation Centre, with the aim to ensure that girls in detention are provided with equitable access to education and employment opportunities.   • On 19 March, UNDP Iraq and the National Committee on the Implementation of the Strategy to Prevent Violent Extremism at the National Security Advisory launched the first dialogue session on the establishment of the Network of Religious Leaders to Prevent Violent Extremism in Iraq. One of its key engagements will be to promote moderate religious discourse, increase awareness and support to community initiatives on PVE - read more on the press release.
