Currently, only 2.7% of the ocean is highly protected and this is far from the goal to protect 30% of the world's oceans by 2030. This paper accentuates the importance of oceans—from restoring biodiversity to increasing the annual global catch and even securing the marine carbon stocks—and proposes a prioritization framework to aid national marine spatial plans and global targets for marine conservation.
