Dear colleagues,

The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Report  is the most comprehensive study of causes of illness and death in our world today. The GBD 2019 study analyzes 286 causes of death, 369 diseases and injuries and 87 risk factors in 204 countries and territories. It was released and published in the Lancet on October 15th, 2020.  

The GBD study highlights the areas where health needs are greatest thereby allowing us to plan more strategically to address those needs in the future. It also allows us to make comparisons over time (from 1990), across age groups and among populations. These features are especially significant right now as the entire world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, while still trying to provide other health and social services.

The GBD 2019, therefore provides an overview of our readiness for a pandemic, allows us to accurately assess where strengths and weaknesses lie and equips us with the information necessary to better prepare for other challenges, while also improving the health and daily lives of people in all regions.
