14 SEPTEMBER 2021

We are thrilled to share with you our new issue of the COP Snapshot featuring curated content and up-to-date resources on poverty and inequality – all in an easy digest.

Worth highlighting is the adoption of UNDP’s Strategic Plan (2022-2025), which reaffirms the organization’s commitment to accelerate progress on eradicating poverty and achieving the SDGs; as well as “Our Common Agenda”, just released by the Secretary-General, which will guide our efforts in the remaining Decade of Action.

Do not miss UNDP’s rapid appraisal report on the situation in Afghanistan, Economic Instability and Uncertainty in Afghanistan After August 15 (9 September 2021), which presents a possible scenario that as much as 97% of the population is at risk of falling below the poverty line if economic growth continues to be hampered. In response, UNDP is proposing a package of interventions designed to help improve the immediate living conditions of the most vulnerable people, focusing on essential services, local livelihoods, basic income and small infrastructure through a 24-month community development programme. Watch the press release here.

We are pleased to announce the creation of a new "In the Know" section which will feature CoP member perspectives on the key priority thematic areas for the COP, including (inter alia) urban poverty and the informal economy, green and inclusive transitions, effective governance for poverty eradication, and multidimensional inequality. Take a look at this section and share your ideas for what we should be "in the know" about with us - we want to feature you!

UNDP's COVID-19 Adaptation and Response: IEO Reflections Series on Lessons from Evaluations

E-DISCUSSION - ONGOING THROUGH 17 SEPTEMBER - LEARN MORE HERE

COVID-19 has required UNDP and many of its projects to ‘pivot’ to address the new and prominent issue of a global pandemic and its socio-economic consequences, especially on the most vulnerable. The pandemic has led many projects and agencies to be flexible and innovative in addressing this new challenge by assigning funds for COVID-19-related support or broadening target groups to include new needs and those who have been impacted. This third "Keeping People Out of Poverty" related installment from the Independent Evaluation Office's Reflections Series presents an evaluation report on UNDP's COVID-19 adaptation and response, and invites you to participate in this lively e-discussion on the topic (moderated by CoP Advisors Renata Rubian and George Gray Molina). The e-discussion remains open through 17 September 2021. Find the links to the report, watch the launch webinar, and participate in the e-discussion here.

Informality is here to stay. This piece, authored by Mihail Peleah, UNDP Programme Specialist Green Economy and Employment, explores the top five things to know about the informal economy, focusing on the ECA region. Gaps in Poverty Measurement
[Equality Insights and the International Women's Development Agency]

INTERACTIVE BRIEF - SEPTEMBER 2021 - EXPLORE HERE

An estimated 700 million people are currently experiencing extreme poverty - to conceptualize it more clearly, this means that 10% of the world’s population is living on less than US$1.90 a day. While we have a general idea, these numbers can’t tell us specifically who is experiencing poverty - their gender, age, whether they have a disability or whether they live in urban or rural areas – all factors that shape and potentially deepen experiences of poverty and inequality. Explore this interactive tool to learn more about why this poses a threat to making real progress on eradicating global poverty here.

PUBLICATION - AUGUST 2021 - EXPLORE HERE

This timely research – conducted jointly by UNDP and the Fredrick S. Pardee Center for International Futures at the University of Denver — estimates the impact of COVID-19 on the SDGs using futures modeling in three potential recovery scenarios, capturing the multidimensional effects of the pandemic over the next decade. Findings indicate that while COVID-19 could widen the gap between rich and poor countries, nations on the lower end of human development can exceed pre-COVID development trajectories by combining right policy choices with investments in governance, social protection, green economy, and digitalization (an ‘SDG Push’).
