MUST-SEE EVENTS OF 2020!

 

Designing a Multidimensional Poverty Index (2021) (MOOC launch). On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, on 22 October 2020, we announced the launch of the second edition of the Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on “Designing a Multidimensional Poverty Index.” A joint effort by UNDP and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI), the course will run from 22 February to 2 April 2021 and will be offered in English, French, and Spanish. Watch the course trailer & Click here to register!
 

Exploring UBI’s Potential to Deliver Economic Security and Gender Equality (Webinar). On 11 June, UNDP Gender and Inclusive Growth Teams co-hosted a webinar to discuss challenges, opportunities, and trade-offs of Universal Basic Income (UBI) as a response to the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19, particularly on women and girls. The session counted with high-level presentations from Dean Karlan, President of Innovations for Poverty Action; Pablo Iglesias, Second Vice President of the Government of Spain; and Kanni Wignaraja, UN Assistant Secretary-General. Advancing Human Well-Being (Internal consultation). In May 2020, we hosted an internal consultation on concrete solutions and pathways to end poverty in all its forms and dimensions, transform inequalities, and advance human capabilities. The inputs informed the key background document for the formal 2020 HLPF Thematic Session on “Advancing Human Well-Being,” co-led by UNDESA, UNDP, UNESCO, WHO and WFP. First Step for Socio-Economic Impact Assessment of COVID-19 (Webinar). On 13 April 2020, together with the CoP on HIV & Health, we hosted a webinar on the implications for socioeconomic impact and needs assessments of the COVID-19 crisis. The session featured George Molina and Lars Jensen (UNDP Global Policy Network) and was moderated by Mandeep Dhaliwal (UNDP Director of HIV, Health and Development). The presenters provided an overview of UNDP’s COVID-19 response and the preliminary results of a working paper on health systems capacity for 183 countries. Watch here.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises. On December 14, we co-hosted an event in collaboration with the UNDP's Inclusive Growth, the Recovery Solutions and Human Mobility, UNDP's Finance Sector Hub, the Business Call to Action, and the International Trade Centre (ITC), that examined COVID-19's impact on small business and enterprises across the globe, with direct insights from MSMEs. Using results from ITC's surveys and testimonies, the event highlighted the adaptive strategies applied by MSMEs and resilience building, and the COVID response and recovery offer by UNDP. The socioeconomic implications of the COVID pandemic: Ideas for policy action (December 2020)


This report consolidates a series of technical papers launched by the UNDP Regional Bureau for Latin America to promote a collective reflection on COVID-19 health and socioeconomic impacts and response. The first volume reflects on global issues connected to the pandemic. The second volume includes country-specific case studies. People’s Money: Harnessing Digitalization to Finance a Sustainable Future (August 2020)


Check out this report by the Task Force on Digital Financing of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on “People’s Money: Harnessing Digitalization to Finance a Sustainable Future” – which was co-Chaired by the UNDP Administrator, Achim Steiner. It explores how digitalization, which is revolutionizing financial markets, can be a critical building block for empowering citizens, enabling governments to support people in need, and achieving the SDGs. Read more.

 

 

 

 

Temporary Basic Income (TBI) (July 2020)
 

This paper explores how Temporary Basic Income (TBI) can help alleviate the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemics on the world’s poorest people. Covering 132 developing countries, it finds that a minimum guaranteed income may be an effective policy option for the short-run and towards longer-term social protection programs to shield the most vulnerable against external shocks.
