Welcome to UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF and UN-Women joint public consultation on the development of their Strategic Plans, 2022-2025. The four UN agencies have launched this event to gather inputs on specific areas of common interest that will feed into the development of each agency’s Strategic Plan, by leveraging the comparative strengths, expertise and resources of the four agencies on a common platform.
Background and Scope
The Strategic Plan is UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF and UN-Women’s most important plan giving each agency key strategic directions for four years. The new Strategic Plans, 2022-2025, are especially important because they will need to explain how the agencies are responding strategically to the COVID-19 pandemic and how we are still intending to help the world achieve the SDG targets.
The Strategic Plans will try to capture what the agencies will contribute in terms of global results over that four-year period, how to achieve some of these results together and explain the important role that human rights, gender, and leaving no one behind plays in our work.
UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF and UN-Women are working together to harmonize their Strategic Plan process wherever feasible, while acknowledging the differences in each agency’s mandate, business model, and global presence.
For the purpose of this consultation, five key thematic areas critical to the priorities of all four agencies were identified:
- Impact of COVID-19 on global development goals
- Climate and the Environment
- Gender Equality
- Strengthening Data and Innovation
- Joint and complementary contribution to reaching the SDGs, including leaving no one behind
Audience
By joining forces in organizing this global consultation, the agencies will be able to widen the scope of engagement on their Strategic Plan development, and gather feedback and ideas from audiences beyond their usual partners and stakeholders.
The joint consultation will target external partners and stakeholders of the four agencies, including but not limited to: Executive Board, Member States and donors; National Committees; other UN entities and development actors, including IFIs; private sector; civil society, including INGOs; and supporters.
Impact
The joint global consultation will use collective intelligence to help UN Agencies scale up their efforts for the Decade of Action, by informing each agency’s Strategic Plan, 2022-2025, and strategies to accelerate development and humanitarian results. Inputs from this multi-stakeholder engagement will strengthen the integrated role of Agencies by informing common approaches on how to tackle key global challenges. The consultation should also open a space for the agencies to be more innovative in addressing challenges both individually and together.
